Getting a nose job, medically referred to as rhinoplasty, is a very common cosmetic surgery procedure. Even so, many people are a bit nervous about this frequently performed cosmetic treatment. Fortunately, what you can expect before, during, and after this treatment is not so bad, and a rhinoplasty can help to provide you with the look that you desire.
Before Rhinoplasty Surgery
In the few weeks prior to your
rhinoplasty surgery, your cosmetic surgeon will direct you to stop taking any aspirin based products as these can thin the blood and cause complications during your
rhinoplasty procedure. If you become ill during this time, you should contact your doctor and inform him of your illness. Minor issues such as colds may not affect your ability to have surgery, but more severe illnesses may result in the surgery needing to be rescheduled.
A few days prior to your
rhinoplasty surgery, take the time to get all of your affairs in order and make sure that you have everything you will need for your recovery. Your cosmetic surgeon should provide you with post-surgery instructions before the surgery takes place so that you can make sure you have everything ready when you come home.
During the Rhinoplasty Procedure
A rhinoplasty is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia. In most cases, rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and you can plan on going home the same day as your surgery. Once you are ready for surgery, the surgeon will begin by making the incisions and begin the process of shaping the nose as necessary to provide you with the results that you are looking for.
The length of your surgery will vary depending on the extent of the procedure you are having performed, but most surgeries are completed within a few hours. You will have a short recovery period in the office before you are released to go home, during which time you will be monitored for any complications.
After Rhinoplasty Surgery
Complete recovery from a rhinoplasty can take a few weeks, with the final results of the surgery not being completely visible for a few months. Immediately following surgery, you will have bruising, swelling and some pain which is easily managed by medication you will receive from the plastic surgeon.
You will be directed to stay in bed for at least 24 hours, during which time your head must remain elevated. Some bleeding is common for a few days immediately after surgery, so you will have to take it easy for at least the first week after the rhinoplasty is completed.
